Taricha granulosaOne of my favorite local wildlife. I think it's because they were one of the easiest animals to catch when I was a kid. They're slow, cute, don't bite, and between January and April they're very easy to find. Walk anywhere in the woods and you have to be careful not to step on them.
And yes, even as a kid, I knew to wash my hands after handling them.

ReplyDeleteIn about a month the subspecies of the Eastern newt that lives in my area will becoming out. This is red-spotted variety.
I particularly like the efts of that species, which look surreal:

ReplyDeleteYeah, rough-skinned newts are a little plain looking. Here you have to turn over logs to find the really cool-looking salamanders.
