Double hind dew claws on a mixed breed dog

Her mama was a rotty, and her daddy was a great pyranean.

  1. Why did the dew claws get removed?

  2. The hind dew claw on the other leg had already been injured previously, so the owner chose to remove the rest during the spay surgery to prevent future injury.

  3. My gosh, those are huge and rather well-formed nails. The ones I've seen (not many) always seem to be deficient or have funky shaped nail beds that produce weird nails.

  4. Yeah, most of the hind dew claws, especially the doubles, seem to have funky nails. Even these rather well-formed ones had no bony attachment, though. Just floppity against the leg.

  5. Best example of a vestigal appendage.

And an atavism on the hind legs.

Borophagine dogs always had dewclaws on the hindlegs, so whenever I see a dog with those claws on the back, I think there's an Epicyon!
