Food

I must link this here because a) I am apparently too lazy to generate my own blog content and am only able to link to interesting things I find and b) to find this later, c) because I love stats graphics and d) hey, food economics, yo.

I've been under the impression that a much larger proportion of subsidies went to grain crops like corn. Hmm. Yet another reason not to buy steak from the supermarket?

I saw this too on Google Flip and was about to cry foul given that I was pretty sure Corn was a grain, or a vegetable, or a fruit.. damn it... but I know it's not MEAT! And I was pretty sure that Corn was a huge subsidy.

Come to find that corn is counted as Meat and Dairy in this graph due to it being the major feed source.

Found you via Retrieverman, added to my daily read.

I wondered if corn counted toward meat. I'm not sure how I feel about that. On the one hand it does go directly to feed, and the cheaper prices via subsidy directly benefit meat farmers. I'm also for anything that highlights our over-dependence on factory-farmed meat. But I wish they were more explicit about it.
