If anything, digital media is even more prone to catastrophic failure than physical media. Canvas paintings, for example, can survive a surprising amount of decay and remain 'readable'. But try recovering bits from a harddrive that's been exposed to damp or heat.

I got my illustration degree during the infancy of 'desktop publishing,' back when typesetters were still saying no designer would ever be able to set their own type and a color Mac would set you back five to seven grand, easy. The concept of digital art has always made me giggle hysterically, because there is no original. None of my digitally colored pieces even exist in the material world, until they are printed, and then they are still not 'original.' Even after watching the comics industry actually move into the digital age from the era of cutting rubylith or painting manual separations, it still strikes me as wildly funny that there is no original to digitally colored pages, I don't know why.
It's like you're speaking some ancient language.
